The one way I force myself to step outside the box is to participate in quiltalongs. I do love paper piecing as it's easy for me and I get accuracy.

When I go fabric shopping I buy a fabric...or two that is not in my normal comfort zone. I also like to take a class that stretches my abilities. I recently took a class, and before going told my friend I had read about the technique the teacher was teaching for one portion of the block and was not going to do it that way, I didn't like it. When I got there the teacher said we could do it either way, but suggested we try her prefered method if we had not used it before. I did as asked, and ended up loving it!

I am working on stepping out of the box with my quilting with different fabrics. I tend to prefer 30's and older repro prints, but am getting some more modern ones (Kate Spain's designs are a favorite).
Love this block. I love to paper piece, so this is up my alley. Very doable.To get out of my comfort zone is to use fabrics for patterns that are not 30's. There are some really cute fabrics. I am relooking at possibilities.
I LOVE paper piecing so this block is right up my alley. Stepping out of my box is when I get really brave and try a new method I've never tried (however, I'm usually a dismal failure! HA)

To step out of my comfort zone I try totally different colors or "go big" since i'm normally working small blocks in reproduction fabrics. Following designers who are doing these "out of the box" type projects really helps too. They all inspire and it is great to see the similarities when compared to repro.
When I do an exchange in my Yahoo groups or The Quilt Show, it stretches me beyond my usual style.

I really like the block & the colors. I recently stepped out of my comfort zone by participating in a block challenge. A real test of my creative abilities!
I do Swaps and don't care to Paper Piece unless I have too! Log Cabin blocks are my enemy, can't make them without my seam ripper...

When I step out of my box, it's usually to try something that is hard for me, like dreaming up an art quilt original design. I can much more easily work with pieced geometric shapes, so it's much more of a stretch to plan out the whole design myself.

Every year I pick one or two things to work on that are new to me. Not too hard to do because I am pretty new to quilting....This year I picked PAPER PIECING and curved seems...Your block certainly fits my challange

I love the fabric and the block. The yoyo addition is just too cute. Stepping out of the box is difficult for me to do, but I am trying to make quilts that have more pieces and more intricate designs.
I step out of my comfort zone with every quilt, since I'm a relatively new quilter. Each new project challenges me in a different way. Congratulations on a lovely block!
I step out of the box by trying passing thoughts that I get. Like I was thinking about how fresh grass picked would smear green on something and go with it.
Anything that requires artistic drawing skills is out of my comfort zone. I still do it sometimes, but I'm not always happy with the results. Give me graph paper and rulers anytime!

Stepping outside the box for me means trying something different I have not done before or using a new fabric type I would normal not chose. That is how you grow when you try new things.
I am working on an Indian Orange Peel quilt right now--it is way outside my box! I am loving the process though and I have learned lots doing this quilt.
I won a copy of the volume one issue of the magazine, and I was determined to make a sampler quilt. I challenged myself to learn how to paper piece and how to machine applique! I did both, using pattern blocks from the magazine. It gave me courage to try other new things I see in online blogs, such as wonky piecing and scrappy piecing.
I love paper piecing, but my out of the box is when I make bags or something in quilting that isn't "flat" or quilty:)
For me it is thread painting or embellishing
I'm about to step out of my box by doing some improvisational piecing. Makes me a little nervous, but I'm also excited to get started!

For me quilt art is adding embellishments to the quilt. Like rick rack ribbon, yo yos, etc.

i like trying to design my own stuff.
I am doing 2 BOMs right now. One is Underground Railroad, and the other is QIAD's First Ladies. Both require different piecing and fabric color choices than I usually use. It is interesting and helps my regular quilting be more creative.

I try to stretch myself in different ways.
I've experimented with BRIGHT (need your sunglasses) fabrics (not sure anyone could sleep under it when it was done...but would make a great night light!)
I'm open to trying different techniques....I'll say 70/30 success rate.
I love experimenting with fabrics....especially when you one that you are really not sure of is THE ONE that really makes your project snap!

When I go to quilt conventions I take classes that are completely out of the norm for me. I take the opportunity to try something new and different, often artsy.

Just recently a blogger showed a crazy patch block, and at first I didn't think I like them. But after making a few blocks, I really love making those blocks and the way they look together.

Good question! I love to follow patterns. I feel lost without one. So improvising is a large step for me to take. But always surprised when I do.
Pretty much every project I've ever made is a chance to try something new - either a technique or quilt style or process I haven't done before or use a tool I haven't used before.
So I've learned a wealth of techniques and haven't made the same quilt twice.
Applique by hand would be way out of the box for me, but I have seen patterns that I might like to do
I am a new quilter and therefore have a pretty small box so far :) Hopefully the next task I can try to stretch my skills is to try free motion quilting. This will be hard to attempt because I'm positive that it take a while to get the hang of it and I don't want to just give up on it right away because it looks horrible when I do it. Just got to get up the nerve. :) Thanks for the chance to win this awesome magazine.

What a great looking block. Very pretty and that adorable yo-yo in the center is perfect. I'm still very new to quilting so for sure any applique would be out of my comfort zone as I've been afraid to try that yet. I do have all the necessary tools to do so and am hoping to find the nerve soon.

That block looks gorgeous, I have just got a tutorial on dvd for paper piecing a lone star quilt. I have only done English paper piecing which is quite different ( to make hexagon flowers) . Belonging to a craft forum and joining in on the swaps has definitely taken me out of my comfort zone, as I have had to make items I have never sewn before.
Just finished a table topper and framed hexagonal coasters recently, now it's back to quilting! :)
I love to paper piece however I have wanted to make a Mariner's Compass or complicated star block for some time and seem to have Quilter's Block when it comes to these blocks. I need to step out of the box and Just Do It!
I'd have to agree that paper piecing is stepping out of the box in quilting for me. I don't do a lot of paper piecing, but I have to say that it stretches me.

Adding beads and other embellishments to my quilts is out of my comfort level --- and I don't do it very often. I really like the music that is playing on your blog, while I am reading and typing.

I have just purchased some fabrics that are way different from what I usually use for quilting, and I am having fun thinking of a more modern design for sewing them. I tend to be more traditional. Love the yo-yo, it adds such a perfect finishing touch to a great block!
I learned how to use Angelina--it's fabulous! And easy! It was the first time I tried something new and it was a real breakthrough for my creativity.

The way I step out is by using different color combinations than I like. I make ALOT of baby quilts for neighbors, friends, and family. I let them choose the colors or theme and sometimes it kills me to put something together that to me is horrid, but am thrilled when I see them using it all the time and loving it. Applique is completely out of my box so your block is VERY appealing to me. You have great colors to bring life to your block
I try to use colours that I normally avoid!
For me to step out of the box, it would be to do something with applique...I've done it very little but tend to stick to good old faithful piecing. And working with batiks would be another step, so I guess appliqueing with batiks would be a 2-step program for me! Congratulations on getting your block in the magazine; can't wait to try it...I DO like paper piecing and your block looks very fun!
My box has big walls for designing. I dont think Im any good at it and I have the hardent time picking fabrics when I like a pattern but not the colors its orginally done in.

I jump in with both feet! If I want to learn FMQ, I join a challenge and choose a big quilt to practice on. If I want to learn applique, I sign up for an outrageously hard (but beautiful!) applique BOM. Love your block, congrats for making it in the magazine!
I find challenges help me to try new things and have fun with quilting friends, at the same time.

Recently some of us formed a sub group in our Quilt Guild. We, as individuals, wanted to make Art Quilts and needed an jump start to do it. We figured that if a group of like-minded quilters could get together we'd motivate ourselves to get moving. And that we are. We've had four or five meetings and are accomplishing quilts that we' had only dreamed about before.
We all have the desire to do the traditional as well.

Congratulations on being included in this 3rd Volume of 100 Blocks ... yay you! As for stepping out of the box, I would have to say using a print or color in a set that I would never use without the suggestion of someone I trust.
Honestly, I havent stepped out much as I generally follow patterns. However, I do sometimes change up the design and incorporate embroidery.
I stepped out of my box on a project using Marti Mitchell plastic templates. I learned alot doing the quilt, but I don't plan to use that method again.

I am stepping out of my comfort zone for a guild challenge by using bright batiks, something I don't normally use. Of course, I didn't stray too far out of the box since I am using my favorite colors, blue and pink! :P

Steping out of the box for me is trying something new that I am already convinced I will not be able to do. Last week I tried curved piecing, OMG, it took me 4 days (ok I don,t have alot of sewing time in a day so stop rolling you eyes)and trying a few different methods, but I finally think I have it down.
Anything with curves is WAY out of my comfort zone, so I'm trying Judy Niemeyer (not shy about stepping out of my box, that's for sure.)

This is a hard question. I do not get out of my comfort zone too much because I do not have much free time to quilt. I recently did purchase a group of shop hop kits in brown colors and look forward to the playing with a color that I do not normally use. Blue is my favorite color to work and I also plan to do the pattern in that colorway as well.
For me stepping out of the box is attempting hand applique or working on a scrap style quilt. Neither come naturally to me!

Love the block. For me stepping out of the box is working will yardage instead of scraps and making it all matchy-matchy. I have a really hard time cutting into yardage!

I try to incorporate new methods in each project. I recently made yo-yo's for the first time to embellish a project. It was fun.
Cute block and I think that I have some fabric that would be perfect. Thanks for the design. I am working on 2 projects that I never thought I would do - one an English paper pieced hexagon quilt and the other a Hawaiian applique wallhanging. Both out of my normal confort zone. I don't know when they will get finished - but it has been fun working on them.
About the most stepping out I do is to pick my own fabrics. I have normally used kits.

Wow - I just love that block! It has so much movement! I am so new to quilting that I don't know if I step out at all... I'm pretty much a pattern follower and a rule follower! I did 'create my own pattern' i guess when I needed to use some fussy cuts for a quilt, so I guess that was stepping out LOL.

I love to play with tiny scraps of fabric. I only make post cards or very small quilts because they are a lot of work, but so much fun.
For me, it would have to be curved piecing, and no, I've never stepped out of the box for that! LOL!
I'm a planner and I like things symmetrical. For me, stepping out of the box is doing improv quilting or anything assymetrical.

This week I pushed my envelope by trying a new quilting technique on my long-arm machine. As I see new concepts, I try them...keeps me learning!
oh, i love your block! it must be amazing sewn up into a quilt.
i tend to try different techniques fairly regularly, because i always have a million ideas that i'm jumping between, but recently i started making bias binding, and bias piping, and now i'm working on a project with bias tape applique.. it's definitely out of my comfort zone (and beyond my patience level some days!), but i love how the hand of the fabric changes and the neat effects you can get by cutting a print on the bias.
I step out of my rigid box when I use vibrant colors or colors I would normally avoid (like orange). Since my sweetheart loves those energetic hues, I have a good reason to stretch.

Learning to hand embroider is my latest stretch. I didn't think it would be possible but after some encouragement found it even had side benefits of feeling calmer and more relaxed. (It's a battle to hand stitch when you are tense.)

You hit the nail on the head, I rarely paper piece or do fusible applique but sometimes when I am looking for a quick pop or strong l element I go for one or both!
I do try different techniques - english paper piecing, foundation piecing, applique....if I try it and don't like it, I don't have to do it again! (But I like all of it!)
It's outside my box to do a mystery quilt, and I've never done one yet that I liked at the end. I will keep trying, though.
I get ideas from other quilters' blogs to get new ideas of things I haven't tried before.
I've never tried paper piecing but it's in my future. Recently I stepped out of my box with a difficult pattern of stars with inset pieces. I called it my slap down quilt because for days I said "I'm not a quilter".
I'm out of my box anytime I tackle an applique project. I have been trying a few new things this year; most recently its been with the product Texture Magic. Who knows what's next? Glad you designed out of your box as I love paper piecing. Sandi

I always make sure I am working on either a quilt-a-long or a round robin or something where there are "rules" I must follow. This gives me the opportunity (makes me!!) step out of my box & try things I wouldn't normally do.
I was recently awestruck by the Art Quilts at the HMQS show in Sandy, Utah - I am going to leap, not step, out of my comfort zone and try one of those - YIKES!
